TARGETING

Mobile vs Desktop Announcement Bars: A Targeting Playbook

Mobile visitors don't browse like desktop visitors. They've got less screen, more pressure, and a thumb to navigate with. A bar that converts on desktop can look terrible on a 390px viewport — and vice versa. PulseBar's per-device toggles let you target mobile, tablet, and desktop independently so the bar matches the surface.

How device targeting works

  • Desktop — viewports wider than 1024px
  • Tablet — viewports 768px to 1024px
  • Mobile — viewports 767px and below
  • At least one device must be enabled; on Free, all three default on

Patterns that win

Shorter mobile copy

Desktop bar: “Free shipping over $50 + 10% off first order with code WELCOME10.” Mobile bar: “10% off — code WELCOME10.” Duplicate the bar, disable mobile on the long version, disable desktop+tablet on the short version, write per-device copy.

Mobile-only campaigns

The Back to School Signup sample ships with mobile-only targeting because back-to-school traffic skews mobile. Apply samples like this when you know the demographic for the campaign skews to one device.

Desktop-only deep promos

Some campaigns need the visual breathing room of desktop — a multi-message slider with a CTA, for example. Disable mobile/tablet for that bar and run a stripped-down equivalent for small screens.

Always test on a real device

Browser dev tools simulate viewport but not font scaling, touch gestures, or iOS Safari quirks. Test the bar on an actual iPhone before going live — particularly with countdown timers, where digit cropping is a common surprise.
