Announcement Bar Best Practices: Copy, Color, Placement, Timing

Twelve best practices we apply to every PulseBar bar that ships in production. Most are simple — they just compound when you ignore them.

Copy

  • Keep the title under 80 characters. Mobile crops mercilessly.
  • Lead with the value, follow with the action. “Free shipping over $50 — shop now,” not “Shop now and get free shipping over $50.”
  • Use progress framing on free-shipping bars. “You're $X away” beats “Spend $Y.”
  • Skip exclamation pile-ups. One per bar at most.

Color

  • Background needs at least 4.5:1 contrast against the text color (WCAG AA).
  • Match the template to the campaign vibe. Black Friday Blitz for premium-aggressive, Minimal Info for low-pressure, Diwali Glow for festive.
  • Don't use red unless you mean urgency. Red on every bar erodes the signal.

Placement

  • Top placement for brand-level messages.
  • Bottom placement for /cart nudges and persistent reminders.
  • Inline section placement for product-page-only social proof.
  • Run more than one — top + bottom is the most common high-converting combo.

Timing

  • Schedule everything in advance — don't run BFCM on hot keys.
  • Use the countdown tied to the schedule's end date. Real end, real countdown.
  • Wind down with a service-led bar (“Thank you — orders ship this week”).

Mobile

  • Test on a real iPhone before going live.
  • Use the per-device toggles to write shorter mobile copy.
  • Confirm the discount code chip is thumb-tappable.
  • Confirm the countdown digits don't crop at 390px width.
