The Free Shipping Threshold Calculator (and How to Use It)

Pick the wrong free shipping threshold and you'll either lose margin (too low) or push shoppers away from the offer entirely (too high). The right threshold is anchored to your current AOV, your shipping economics, and the upsell behavior you want to nudge. Here's the formula plus the bar copy that does the communicating.

The threshold formula

Pick a threshold roughly 30–40% above your current AOV. If your AOV is $74, target $99. The 30–40% gap is wide enough to incentivize a second item but narrow enough that a meaningful percentage of shoppers will close it.

Worked example

  • Current AOV: $74
  • Target threshold: $99 (33% above AOV)
  • Bar copy: “You're $X away from free shipping — keep shopping”
  • Targeting: /cart only
  • Expected lift: 15–30% AOV depending on category

How to communicate the threshold on a bar

Lead with progress framing, not cost framing. “You're $12 away from free shipping” outperforms “Spend $50 to unlock free shipping” because the first frames a goal-completion moment, the second frames an obstacle. Add “keep shopping” as the low-friction nudge.

The shipping math

Free shipping isn't free for you — it's a margin transfer. Calculate your shipping cost per order, divide by the marginal margin on the upsell item, and that's your minimum threshold lift before you're breaking even. Most brands break even fast because the upsell item is high-margin.

Run the cart-only bar for two weeks

Apply PulseBar's Free Shipping Nudge sample (pre-configured for /cart targeting). Run for two weeks. Compare AOV pre and post. That's your honest answer — no calculator estimate can beat a two-week field test on your store.
